QWhat is the language of instruction for this program?

Our program courses are taught in Japanese.

QWhat is the tuition for the 5th year if I haven’t fulfilled graduation requirements by the end of the 4th year?

A

The tuition in the fifth year will be charged on a per-credit basis. The rate is JPY11,000 per credit. If you take more than 31 credits, you will be charged the full annual tuition of JPY350,000.

QCan I split the annual tuition into 2 installments, one for spring and the other for fall?

A

No. We only accept a one-time full payment.

QWhat is your policy when receiving requests for accommodation for students with disabilities before and after enrollment?

A

QAre university-affiliated educational loans available for this program?

A

A university-affiliated educational loan called “Tuition Support Plan” is available from Orient Corporation (Orico). An educational loan called “Government Educational Loan” is available from Japan Finance Corporation (JFC), a government-affiliated financial institution. We recommend contacting them directly for details.

QIs the Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) scholarship available for this program?

A

The “Grant-Type Scholarship “ (Kyufu-Shogakukin) and tuition reduction and exemption plans are available from the Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) as OUS is recognized by JASSO. However, we recommend visiting their website for individual eligibilities and other requirements.

QWhen do you start to accept applications for non-degree students?

A

For the Spring 2026 intake, applications open from Feb 10-28, 2026, and for the Fall 2026 intake, from June 10-29. The details will be announced on our website.

QAre seminars delivered in real-time?

A

Some seminars expect students to attend at a set time. If you cannot attend real-time sessions, you will need to watch recorded lectures and/or submit assignments. Other seminars require students to complete and submit assignments, final projects or final reports instead.

QHow are the graduation projects conducted online?

A

In “Information Science and Engineering Seminars 1 and 2, ” graduation research project courses, students will be guided by assigned professors. Instruction formats may vary including live sessions and pre-recorded (VOD) lectures. Active communication is expected, especially for guidance and mid-term project progress reports. Final projects and/or reports must be submitted for the course evaluation.

QWill the credits I earned as a non-degree student be counted toward the graduation requirements once I am admitted to the program as a degree-seeking student?

Yes. The credits you earned as a non-degree student in the online program can be transferred and applied toward the credits required for graduation once you are officially admitted to the program as a degree-seeking student.

QAm I supposed to attend classes at scheduled time?

A

Most lectures are pre-recorded and delivered on demand online. Students watch them on their own schedule. Some seminars are delivered in real-time and students are expected to log in to OUS-LMS at a set time to participate.

QDo you offer information sessions about the online program?

A

Yes. We conduct information sessions online and in-person. During the sessions, you will learn about our program including curriculum, courses, online learning via the LMS and the program news and updates. For online information sessions, we usually hold group sessions at predetermined times and one-on-one meetings upon request. For in-person information sessions, we host the events on campus in Japan several times a year and we also travel to several cities in Japan to attend the University Correspondence Education Fairs and meet prospective students. QDoes the program lead to a teaching qualification?

A

No. This online degree program does not grant a teaching qualification.

QDo you hold an entrance ceremony?

A

Yes. It is typically scheduled on April 3. Newly admitted students will receive the details in March.

QWhat is the maximum number of credits a student is allowed to earn?

A

Degree-seeking students may earn up to 22 credits per semester and 44 credits per academic year. Non-degree students may earn up to 31 credits a year.

QHow many credits are required for graduation?

A

A minimum of 124 credits is required for graduation. This program requires a minimum of 34 credits from the general education courses and 80 credits from the specialized courses.

QWhat degree will be granted upon completion of the course?

A

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Science and Engineering.

QDoes tuition include textbooks?

A

No. The cost of textbooks are not included in tuition. Our school fees include application fee of JPY 10,000 (paid at the time of application), admission fee of JPY30,000 (paid once during the initial enrollment procedures) and annual tuition of JPY350,000.
Required textbooks vary by courses and students need to purchase them as instructed. Most textbooks are digital. Approximate cost of textbooks (38-44 credits) for the 1st year level is JPY13,000 for the spring term and JPY5,000 for the fall term.

QHow is the online course structured and what is the outcome after completion?

A

Each course typically has 15 sections. One section lasts 90 minutes and contains six 10-minute video lectures and follow-up quizzes/reports. Quizzes help students to reinforce their understanding. After completing the 15 sections and passing final exams, students earn 2 credits.

QHow can I ask professors questions?

QIs there any distinction between the online and on-campus degrees at the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering?

A

No. There is no difference between the online and on-campus degrees from the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering.

QWhen do you accept transfer students to the online degree program?

A

We start accepting the 2nd-year transfer students in the academic year 2026 and the 3rd-year students in 2027.

QDo online and on-campus students in the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering learn the same educational content?

A

They are nearly the same except practical, hands-on courses such as “AI Robotics” and “Mechatronics” which are offered only in the on-campus program. The online program curriculum exclude these courses due to its delivery format limitations.

QCan I transfer to an on-campus program from the online program?

A

It is possible to transfer to an on-campus program at the 2nd or 3rd year level on a space-available basis at the receiving departments after completing the required courses in the online program and successfully going through the screening process. You can also transfer credits earned from the online courses to an on-campus program after meeting the credit transfer requirements.
Please be aware that you are expected to pay the on-campus program tuition which is different from online program’s and to commute in-person to either Okayama Campus or Imabari Campus in Japan after switching the programs.

QCan I join a student club?

A

Yes. You can join a student club after becoming a member of the student union. There are some online student clubs available such as “Information Profess Club” and “E-Sports Club.” After becoming a member of the student union and meeting the requirements, you can even start a new student club.

QCan I use the university libraries?

A

Yes. You can visit the libraries in person or access their digital books and journals online.

QI am not good at math. Would that be a problem?

A

Not necessarily. We offer preparatory courses which covers basic math and English. The curriculum also supports students in developing a strong foundation through fundamental courses in math and information science.

QCan I transfer the credits earned from other universities?

A

It depends on the courses completed. Upon admission, please contact our office with the transcript and syllabi from the university attended. We will review the documents to evaluate credit transferability.

QWhat are included in the school fees?

A

Our school fees include the application fee of JPY10,000 (paid at the time of application), admission fee of JPY30,000 (paid at your first year in the program) and annual tuition of JPY350,000. You can earn up to 22 credits per semester and to 44 credits per academic year.

QCan I enroll as a non-degree student?

A

Yes. We accept non-degree enrollment on a space-available basis in the online degree program. For non-degree students, the application fee is JPY5,000, admission fee is JLY10,000 and tuition is JPY11,000/credit.

QDo I need to take a traditional entrance exam for this online program?

A

No. There is no traditional entrance exam. Applicants submit the required application documents and we holistically review the documents for admission decisions.

QDo you provide student-visa support?

A

No. As our program is delivered online, students are not required to obtain a visa to study in this program.

QAm I expected to attend classes in person?

A

No. All courses are delivered online with no on-campus requirements. Some seminar courses required students to attend real-time sessions, but most lectures are pre-recorded and delivered on demand. Students can watch them on their own schedule. Final exams are also conducted online.

QPlease tell me in detail how online classes are delivered.

A

Students take courses through the OUS-LMS after logging in to the system and choosing the classes they are interested in. They study pre-recorded lectures and use print/digital textbooks, including PDF files, and complete assignments including quizzes to reinforce their understanding. For programming courses, students write programs, observe the outcome and submit assignment reports to enhance their learning. Students watch videos, take quizzes and submit reports through the LMS which is accessible from anywhere with an internet connection.

QDo I need a computer?

A

You can watch pre-recorded lectures on your device such as smartphones or tablets, but a computer is required to take seminar courses including programming and graduation research/project. When you take the final exams online, you need a device with a built-in or external camera for facial recognition.
