Over 60 years since its founding in 1964, Okayama University of Science (OUS) has been committed to educating individuals to make positive contributions to society. We are now stretching our aspirations to offer our quality education to more students around the globe, delivering the academic offerings of the Department of Information Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering, through an online degree program.

With the flexibility and convenience of fully online learning, students can acquire advanced mathematical knowledge and skills central to information technology, at their own time and place. Courses are offered in Japanese across the four specialized fields, “Information Systems,” “AI Technology,” “Business Data Science” and “Digital Game/Media.” These fields and skills are in high demand and essential in today’s rapidly evolving society.

Around their work and family commitments, students can study at home, in the office, or anywhere in the world. We hope our online degree program will help students fully explore their subjects of interests on their own schedule, while advancing toward their goals!

What is Unique about OUS Distance Education Program?

An Online Degree Program from
a 4-Year University

To reintroduce ourselves as a renewed “Okayama University of Science (OUS),” also known as “Ridai,” we added a distance education program in April 2025 to the existing undergraduate and graduate programs. We undertook this step with the next generation of learners in mind. Since the educational content is nearly identical, students in this online degree program can transfer to the on-campus program at the 2nd or 3rd year level in the Department of Information Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering. OUS Online offers an open and more accessible learning experience for diverse audiences.

FAQs

QHow is the online course structured and what is the outcome after completion?

A

Each course typically has 15 sections. One section lasts 90 minutes and contains six 10-minute video lectures and follow-up quizzes/reports. Quizzes help students to reinforce their understanding. After completing the 15 sections and passing final exams, students earn 2 credits.

QAm I expected to attend classes in person?

A

No. All courses are delivered online with no on-campus requirements. Some seminar courses required students to attend real-time sessions, but most lectures are pre-recorded and delivered on demand. Students can watch them on their own schedule. Final exams are also conducted online.

QPlease tell me in detail how online classes are delivered.

A

Students take courses through the OUS-LMS after logging in to the system and choosing the classes they are interested in. They study pre-recorded lectures and use print/digital textbooks, including PDF files, and complete assignments including quizzes to reinforce their understanding. For programming courses, students write programs, observe the outcome and submit assignment reports to enhance their learning. Students watch videos, take quizzes and submit reports through the LMS which is accessible from anywhere with an internet connection.

QDo I need a computer?

A

You can watch pre-recorded lectures on your device such as smartphones or tablets, but a computer is required to take seminar courses including programming and graduation research/project. When you take the final exams online, you need a device with a built-in or external camera for facial recognition.
